Teams stores temporary files (a cache) on your computer to load faster. Sometimes these files get out of date or corrupted, which can make Teams slow, stuck on a loading screen, or show old messages and profile pictures. Clearing the cache is safe and fixes many of these problems.
When to try this
Clear the cache if Teams:
- shows a blank or white screen, or keeps loading
- won't sign in, or keeps asking you to sign in
- shows out-of-date chats, channels or pictures
- is very slow or crashes, even after a restart.
Your chats, files and meetings are stored in Microsoft 365, not in the cache, so you won't lose anything. Before you start, try quitting Teams and restarting your computer, as that's often enough.
Windows: repair or reset the new Teams
These steps are for the new Microsoft Teams on Windows 11. Labels can differ slightly between Windows versions.
- Quit Teams: right-click the Teams icon in the taskbar (near the clock) and choose Quit.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft Teams, select the ... next to it, and choose Advanced options.
- Scroll down and select Repair. Wait for the tick to appear, then open Teams to see if the problem is fixed.
- If it isn't, go back to the same screen and select Reset.
Repair keeps your settings. Reset clears the app's data, including the cache, and signs you out. After a reset you'll need to sign in again, and settings like your notification preferences, background effects and device choices may go back to their defaults.
macOS: clear the cache
- Quit Teams: with Teams open, choose Teams > Quit Microsoft Teams from the menu bar, or press Cmd + Q.
- Open Finder, then select Go > Go to Folder from the menu bar.
- Type
~/Library/Group Containers/UBF8T346G9.com.microsoft.teamsand press Return. Move that folder to the Bin. - Repeat for
~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.teams2. - Open Teams and sign in again.
If a folder isn't there, skip it and continue. Microsoft keeps current instructions in Clear the Teams client cache.
Still not working?
- Check service status to see whether Microsoft 365 is having problems.
- Try Teams on the web at teams.microsoft.com. If it works there, the problem is with the app on your computer.
- Install any pending updates: see Restart and install updates.
