ICN network design

One converged network for voice, data and security.

ICN stands for Intelligent Converged Network: structured cabling and network design that carries voice, data, Wi-Fi and security systems on one properly engineered backbone. Built for new office fitouts, or to bring an ageing, patched-together site up to a documented standard.

Converged
Voice, data, security and Wi-Fi carried on one designed backbone.
Structured
Cabling designed and installed to a documented, repeatable standard.
Tested
Every cable run tested and certified before it's handed over.
Documented
As-built diagrams and a port register handed over at completion.
Why this matters

Because retrofitting a network is expensive and messy.

The cheapest time to get network design right is before the walls close up. A converged, properly documented backbone costs less to run for the life of the site than a patchwork of ad-hoc cable runs added one project at a time.

Retrofitting is expensive and messy.

Adding cabling after a fitout is finished means working around finished ceilings, walls and floors. Designing the network before the build starts is dramatically cheaper and far less disruptive.

Converged infrastructure reduces complexity.

One properly designed backbone carrying voice, data and security is simpler to operate, troubleshoot and expand than separate, siloed cabling systems installed at different times by different people.

Poor cabling causes years of pain.

Untested runs, undocumented patch panels and ad-hoc extensions are the root cause of a huge share of "intermittent" network problems. Getting the physical layer right removes an entire category of ongoing fault-finding.

What's included

Designed properly, installed to standard.

synfo designs and specifies the network, project-manages the installation with licensed structured cabling partners, and hands over a fully tested, documented network ready to build your Wi-Fi, security and IT systems on top of.

Structured cabling design

Cable pathways, containment and patch panel layout designed against recognised structured cabling standards, sized for current needs and future growth.

Network topology & switching

Core and access switching, VLAN segmentation and redundancy designed around how the business actually uses the site, not a generic template.

Converged voice, data & security cabling

Phones, workstations, Wi-Fi access points, CCTV and access control all riding on the same designed backbone instead of separate, uncoordinated cable runs.

Wireless coverage design

Access point placement planned against the building layout and expected device density, rather than added ad-hoc after coverage complaints start.

Cable testing & certification

Every run tested and certified against the specified performance standard before handover, so faults are caught at installation, not months later.

As-built documentation & handover

Diagrams, cable and port registers and test results delivered at project close, so anyone who touches the network afterwards isn't starting from a blank page.

FAQ

Questions we get asked about ICN network design.

What does ICN stand for?
Intelligent Converged Network: one designed, structured cabling and network backbone that carries voice, data and security systems together, instead of separate cabling runs for each.
Do you do the physical cabling installation yourselves?
synfo designs, specifies and project-manages the installation, working with licensed structured cabling partners to carry out the physical pulls, terminations and testing to the standard we specify.
Is this only for new office fitouts?
No. While ICN design is most straightforward as part of a new fitout, it applies equally to upgrading or re-cabling an existing site, consolidating multiple cabling generations, or extending a network into a new area.
How does this fit with your Connectivity or Managed IT services?
ICN design is the physical foundation. Once it's in place, our Connectivity service handles internet links, SD-WAN and VPN, and a managed IT agreement covers ongoing monitoring, support and change requests across the network it's built on.
Do you provide as-built documentation when the project is finished?
Yes. Every project is handed over with as-built diagrams, a cable and port register, and test and certification results, so future changes can be made without guesswork.
